It's unbelievable!

From the Associated Press:

"The merger of Gates and Buffett may spell doom for the families of the developing world," said the Rev. Thomas Euteneuer, a Roman Catholic priest who is president of Human Life International.

Referring to Josef Mengele, the infamous Nazi death camp doctor, Euteneuer said Buffett "will be known as the Dr. Mengele of philanthropy unless he repents."

"Some of the wealthiest men in the world descend like avenging angels on the populations of the developing world," wrote Population Research Institute president Steven Mosher, a frequent critic of Gates and Buffett. "They seek to decimate their numbers, to foist upon vulnerable people abortion, sterilization and contraception."

I'm speechless! It's clear that neither of the speakers has spent any time in a third-world country nor lived with poverty, hunger and disease.

Catching Up

Wow, but I've been delinquent!

I'm scheduled for a stress/echo test a week from Friday and then I will start cardiac rehab. I'm not supposed to exercise until then, but I've been walking a little with Cathy and I feel fine except that my legs get tired easily -- probably from lack of exercise!

Cathy says she think she's turned the corner. :-) She's been in physical therapy this week and she's now limiting her time sitting up to an hour or so. Then she lays down for a half-hour or so, and then up again. It's been working pretty well. Today she drove in to Columbus, had her hair cut and drove home -- about 40 minutes total.

I've been buying Fathers Day presents like crazy! :-) First, I bought a Canon MP830, a scan/copy/fax/memory card machine that can do legal documents (I want to produce an electronic version of the bylaws and covenants here) and it's great. I found a bargain, I think, and brought the whole thing here for well under $300.

Then I bought a 37" HDTV set so we could put the 32-incher in the great room. However, Comcast has the HD/DVR cable boxes on back order so we're waiting.

And I decide to do a little home-handyman stuff again. I haven't done any for years, mainly because of my eyesight, but our local handyman was tied up and our kitchen faucet was obviously broken. I had Moen FedEx the part (a cartridge that had worn out O-rings was the culprit) and I borrowed a 7/64" Allen wrench from the aforementioned handyman. I was able to get everything apart (I thought) but it didn;t work right when I put it all together, so I called Moen. They have a call-back service that kicks in if you have had to wait more a few minutes and, sure enough, they actually called back when they said they would. The support person (a native speaker of English, I might add!) walked me through taking it apart (there was one assembly that I hadn't disassembled far enough) and putting it togther and it worked!!

Moen sent one of those pictorial instruction sheets with the cartridge that apparently fits every faucet they have and of course my faucet wasn't there.

Sunday we're going to Bill and Drew's for Fathers Day brunch -- Bill's preparing a low-fat dish just for me and it sounds delicious.
