They weren't as good as we thought!

For much of the baseball season, the Red Sox were one of the top-rated teams, but they have been exposed as pretenders. If you look at their record, they are playing slightly better than .500 against their American League rivals. That would put them in third place, behind the Yankees and Toronto.

Two reasons: timely hitting and pitching.

The starting pitching staff was decimated early in the season and the number 2 starter, the much ballyhooed Josh Becket, is a flop. So they have Schilling and maybe Wells.

The bullpen has also been awful except for Jonathon Papelbon. We knew that Tavarez and Seanez were journymen and I guess we were oversold on just how good Alvarez, Delcarmen, DiNardo, Hansen, Lester and Van Buren were. They've been awful!

As far as hitting goes, the numbers look fine. Oritz leading both leagues in homer ans RBIs. Manny hitting .369 with 9 homers and 31 RBIs in the 35 ganes since the All-Star break. And so on. But the hits aren't coming with runners on the bases. So they win 1 and they lose 1.

No World Series this year. No AL Championship. No post season. Nothing.
